Spanish 3-way emerald and diamond pendant brooch in 18k gold and silver, c.1880
This chunky and heavy 3-way emerald and diamond convertible pendant brooch is crafted in 18k gold and silver, dating to the second half of the 19th century. Spanish in origin, it features a bold openwork design with flowing ribbon motifs and star-like collet settings that lend a striking yet intricate look.
Weighing a whopping 30 grams, this is a substantial and beautifully constructed piece of jewelry—heavy in the hand and clearly the work of a skilled artisan.
The design comprises two detachable brooches that can be worn separately or combined into a dramatic statement brooch. The larger brooch is also fitted with a concealed bail, allowing it to be worn as a pendant.
It is set with 7 round-cut emeralds and 3 emerald-cut emeralds, alongside 7 old European-cut diamonds and 4 rose-cut diamonds. Some of the gemstones may be later replacements.
Please note: we acquired this impressive two-part jewel as shown in the photographs, but we believe there may once have been a small third dangle element, now missing, as indicated by a loop at the bottom.
