Antique French Greek Revival style animal intaglio set c.1850
This is a set of antique French agate intaglio earrings and a brooch pendant from the 1830-1850s, crafted in solid 18k gold and featuring various animal intaglios.
The set carries a Greek Revival style, reflecting the influence of Neoclassicism, with clean and symmetrical outlines that exude a stately, temple-like elegance. The earrings feature a pendant with a palmette design that creates a rich effect, while the brooch pendant is adorned with curved yet symmetrical fern leaf motifs. Both pieces are set with agate intaglios depicting animals. The agate's clear and distinct layers enhance the overall color and balance.
The earrings depict an owl and an ancient form of dolphin, corresponding to the two animal figures on the sides of the brooch pendant. At the center of the pendant is an eagle in flight. These animals can be linked to prominent Greek deities: the owl representing Athena, the goddess of wisdom; the dolphin associated with Poseidon, god of the sea; and the eagle as Zeus's messenger and manifestation. The overall design is classically elegant and brimming with Greek Revival characteristics.
The pieces are in good antique condition, showing signs of normal oxidation and wear. The banded agate with the eagle intaglio on the brooch pendant has several hairlines on the surface of the stone, but it poses no risk of breakage.
