In the early 15th century, Zheng He’s voyages to the Western Ocean brought him to the Malay Peninsula multiple times, strengthening the connections between the Ming Dynasty and various Southeast Asian countries. From that time, many Chinese men migrated to Southeast Asia and intermarried with the local indigenous population. The term "Baba-Nyonya" refers to the descendants of these mixed marriages between Chinese immigrants (from the Ming and Qing Dynasties) and local indigenous people, who settled in areas like Malacca, Indonesia, and Singapore from the early 15th to the 17th century. The males are known as Baba, and the females as Nyonya.

This 600-year-old Chinese culture, dominated by the local Chinese women's culture in Southeast Asia, is known as Peranakan culture. Today, remnants of this culture are still relatively well-preserved in Malacca, Penang (Malaysia), and Singapore.

Unlike the preservation and inheritance of Western antique jewelry, which can span centuries, Asian culture does not favor second-hand items or antique jewelry. Most Asian antique jewelry (including from Taiwan) ends up with the gemstones removed and the gold melted down. Therefore, preserved antique Peranakan jewelry is extremely rare. Peranakan jewelry incorporates elements of Southeast Asian culture and is also influenced by Singapore's past as a British colony, making it a perfect blend of Eastern and Western cultures.
