English Victorian horseshoe gold earrings

DESCRIPTION

This pair of gold horseshoe hook earrings dates back to the late 19th century and originates from England.

The horseshoe shape has long been regarded as a symbol of luck in the Western world. Horses were vital means of transportation in continental Europe since ancient times, affordable only to the wealthy, thus holding high status. The horseshoe, used to protect the horse's hooves, became a symbol of luck and wealth. Wearing a lucky horseshoe was one of the many superstitions of the late 19th century, during England's Victorian era or France's reign of Napoleon III. People believed that wearing a horseshoe could ward off evil spirits and bring luck and success to the wearer. Such symbols of luck, akin to the four-leaf clover, injected positive superstitions into life and remain popular jewelry themes even today.

The earrings feature various tones of gold on the elegantly curved horseshoe shape, presenting rivets and other design details. With a simple composition, they capture the classic elements of horseshoe design, and their overall proportion and size are charming. The back bears British hallmarks, though slightly slanted; only the 625 hallmark representing 15k gold is discernible. The pieces are in good antique condition, showing normal oxidation and signs of wear.
