French Belle Époque sapphire and diamond duchess ring c.1900
This ring from the French Belle Époque period, circa 1900, is crafted in 18k solid gold and platinum, set with diamonds and a natural sapphire (tested).
The shank is made of 18k yellow gold, while the diamond settings are partially topped with platinum to enhance the brilliance of the diamonds—an elegant hallmark of precious metal craftsmanship from this era, reflecting the popular bimetallic technique of gold and platinum.
At the center is a pear-cut natural sapphire, framed below by old mine-cut diamonds. These diamonds are notable for their slightly high crowns and hand-cut facets with a charming asymmetry, all typical of the period.
The overall composition curves in a symmetrical arc, with a design reminiscent of a bow, ribbon, or crown. In modern antique jewelry circles, such styles are often affectionately referred to as “duchess rings”—a descriptive rather than historical term, used to denote rings with prominent center stones and accent gems, evoking an aristocratic, elegant grandeur.
