French Romantic era Perpignan Garnet Floral Earrings, c.1850
This pair of earrings from 1850s France is a charming example of Romantic period jewelry, crafted in silver with gold gilding and now newly fitted by our jeweler with 18k gold ear wires for comfortable modern wear. Set with garnets from both Perpignan and Bohemia—two trade names commonly used in antique jewelry—this piece brings together regional gem traditions in a single, exuberant design.
The upper floral cluster and teardrop cabochon dangle are set with vivid crimson Bohemian garnets, while the outer halo of the drop is adorned with rose-cut Perpignan garnets, famed for their distinctive purplish-red hue. The interplay of cutting styles—cabochon and rose cut—combined with the natural variation in garnet tone, creates a rich and playful visual rhythm.
From a gemological perspective, the garnets used here are likely a mix of almandine and pyrope types, with Perpignan garnets exhibiting higher magnesium content and a unique glow. These garnets are set in traditional closed-back settings with reflective foil, a hallmark of historical Perpignan jewelry, enhancing their fire and depth.
The local mines around Perpignan have long since been exhausted, making antique examples the only way to collect these storied stones today. These earrings capture the essence of that legacy—with hand-cut stones, period foiling techniques, and generous French flair.
In antique condition with expected signs of oxidation and wear consistent with age. Some areas show more prominent wear. Please refer to our close-up photos as part of your assessment.
