English Georgian moss agate and garnet ring, c.1800
This ring, dating to the early 19th century, features a central moss agate framed by a halo of flat-cut garnets. The agate displays a natural crimson plume within a semi-translucent beige ground, offering a striking visual contrast. Based on the construction and choice of materials, the piece is likely of English origin.
Gold content analysis reveals a slight difference between the head (48.71% gold, approximately 11k) and the shank (43.66%, approximately 10k), suggesting the ring may be a later conversion—an adaptation that remains respectful of the original design.
Under magnification, several garnets show chips to the edges consistent with age-related wear. The reverse of the setting is concave. Overall, the ring is in antique condition with signs of wear appropriate to its period.
