Victorian ouroboros pendant with malachite and snake chains in 9ct gold, c.1870–1890

This late 19th-century English pendant is crafted in 9ct solid gold and composed of three distinct segments arranged in a long, vertical composition. At the top sits a screw-and-hinge clasp that opens and closes securely, allowing the piece to be attached to a necklace, collar ring, or watch chain—whatever detail you dare.

The middle section features an antique snake chain made of tightly linked, rounded segments. Smooth to the touch and naturally flexible, the chain flows into a double-sided foliate panel with fine engraving on both sides, adding structure and decoration in equal measure.

Suspended below are three malachite-set ouroboros drops, each one formed by a gold serpent tightly coiled around a green stone. The ouroboros—an ancient symbol of eternity and cyclical time—appears across Egyptian, Norse, Indian, West African, and Mesoamerican cultures. In Victorian jewelry, it often carries meanings of unending love, remembrance, and continuity.

The malachites display rich green color with natural banding and swirling patterns—each one unique, yet unmistakably of the same voice. Their size and depth give the pendant not only visual rhythm but symbolic weight. These were not just ornamental choices. They were meant to speak.

This configuration is exceptionally rare. While similarly constructed Batchelor button pendants exist—usually set with coral—this version with malachite and ouroboros symbolism is unlike any we’ve seen.

It dangles like an amulet, moves like a pendant, and wears like no other.

In good antique condition with signs of age. The gold shows oxidation and wear consistent with use, with some areas more pronounced. The malachite orbs show natural pits and internal stone lines typical of the material.
