1840s French foil-backed citrine cross pendant, c.1840
This French cross pendant from the 1840s is crafted in 18k solid gold, set with topaz and citrines backed with red foil.
When light reflects from the metal foil, the citrines show an interplay of red, yellow, and orange tones. This “oil and vinegar” colour effect is especially visible across the small stones, shifting with angle and light.
Elongated teardrop terminals extend the proportions and give the cross a more animated outline. At the centre, a square-cut topaz anchors the composition. Its crisp geometry draws the eye inward and provides a stable focal point that balances the overall structure.
The pendant is in antique condition consistent with age, showing normal oxidation and wear. It bears the French horse’s head hallmark, and the reverse shows several small dents.
