Mid-19th-century French Auvergne large Holy Spirit pendant

This French Holy Spirit pendant, dating to the 1860s, is a regional jewel from the Auvergne region. Crafted in 18k solid gold, the pendant is set with red foil-backed citrines and decorated with hand-painted enamel. A distinctive feature of this piece is its unusually large scale. Enamel decoration on Holy Spirit pendants is often fragile and frequently damaged; in this example, the enamel remains largely intact.

The enamel depicts white feathers, accented with green and blue dots, giving the descending dove a vivid and animated presence. The pendant is set with red foil-backed citrines, which, when light reflects from the metal foil, display an interplay of red, yellow, and orange tones. This colour effect is sometimes described as an “oil and vinegar” appearance—referring to two colours that appear layered together while remaining visually distinct, much like oil and vinegar contained in the same vessel.

The descending dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit, reaching from heaven into the earthly realm. Below, three teardrop-shaped drops represent the tears of Christ. In the Auvergne region, Holy Spirit pendants could be given as wedding gifts from groom to bride, or passed from mother to daughter as heirlooms. These pendants were not merely decorative objects, but personal companions that accompanied the wearer throughout life.

The pendant is in good antique condition, showing normal oxidation and wear consistent with age. The enamel is largely well preserved, with minor losses and a slight yellowing due to oxidation. The piece bears the French eagle’s head hallmark and a lozenge-shaped maker’s mark.
