Late 19th century French Perpignan garnet ring

This French ring dates to the late 19th century and is crafted in solid 18k gold, set with Perpignan garnets.

At the centre, a richly saturated marquise-cut garnet is framed by surrounding rose-cut garnets in purplish-red tones. The slender outline and crisp facet geometry of the principal stone visually elongate the proportions of the ring. The marquise-cut centre stone elongates the overall proportions, and the surrounding rose-cut garnets are arranged in a distinct two-tier configuration, emphasising vertical layering. The clear differentiation between the upper and lower levels strengthens the spatial arrangement and gives the composition a well-defined structure.

The garnets used in this ring originate from the Perpignan region in southern France, and the ring retains construction features characteristic of traditional Perpignan garnet jewellery, including closed-back settings, hand-cut rose-cut garnets, and the use of foil beneath the stones. Garnets from this region are known for their distinctive palette, ranging from rose red and pinkish tones to purplish and occasionally orange-red hues. When paired with foil backing, light is reflected more effectively, allowing the colour to appear brighter and more vivid. As the original mining sources in this area have long since ceased operation, such garnets are now encountered only in antique jewellery, making them a valuable example of regional craftsmanship and material tradition.
