English gold and pearl floral and foliate jabot pin, late 19th century

This English jabot pin from the late 19th century is crafted in 18k gold and set with pearls.

The design combines a flower and a foliate motif. This type of long pin, ornamented at both ends, is known as a jabot pin and was originally used to secure a jabot, or decorative neck frill, with only the two decorated terminals visible on the surface of the garment.

The floral terminal is more compact in outline, with a central pearl establishing the main point of focus. The opposite terminal takes the form of an open leaf spray, with pearls distributed along the leaves. Together, the two ends echo one another in theme while creating a contrast between a more concentrated and a more expanded structure, allowing the piece to retain visual continuity across its linear form.
