Late 19th Century French Diamond and Pearl Pendant Brooch

This late nineteenth-century French pendant brooch is crafted in 14k gold (65.7% gold content) and silver, and set with diamonds and pearls.

The brooch is formed as an asymmetrical circular composition, with diamonds graduating in size as they follow the outline of the design. The diamonds are set in silver-topped gold, a construction commonly found in nineteenth-century diamond jewellery.

Its flowing curves and foliate ornament display characteristics associated with the emerging Art Nouveau aesthetic of the late nineteenth century. Three pearls are positioned at the centre of the design, while a fourth pearl is placed above.

The hinged loop to the reverse originally allowed a pocket watch or other personal accessory to be suspended beneath the brooch. Today, the same feature also enables the jewel to be worn as a pendant.

Viewed from the side, the brooch reveals a substantial and deeply constructed profile.
