French star and moon dormeuse earrings with fitted box

DESCRIPTION

A pair of 18k solid rose gold crescent moon and star dormeuse earrings from French Napolélon III era, c.1860-1870s. The French word dormeuse means sleeper in English. Dormeuse earrings refers to a kind of front to back system hook earrings that is so secure that can be worn whiling sleeping.

Star and moon are very popular motifs in antique jewelry for its positive and beautiful meaning of “light of guidance in your life”.

On the crescent moon are 3 half pearls in star-etched setting while at the top of crescent moon a five-horned pearl star is highlighted. The French eagle’s head mark for 18k gold and maker’s hallmark can be seen on the side of the hook.

It comes with a gold-trimmed black velvet earrings box which might not be original but is perfectly fitted for the earrings.
