1809-1819 French Napoléon I era gold shield locket with mini padlock
This shield-shaped locket dates back to the Napoleonic era in France, around the 1800s. It is crafted entirely in 18k solid gold and adorned with natural pearls, featuring a mini padlock at the bottom that can be opened and closed.
Jewelry trends during the Napoleonic era were heavily influenced by Neoclassicism, which sought to emulate the rational and neutral styles characteristic of ancient Greek and Roman periods. The shield, with its clean, symmetrical lines and connection to epic ancient battles, was an ideal subject for creative expression. Additionally, Napoleon's military background made such themes popular during this period. The shield itself carries positive symbolic meanings of protection and strength, making it a tangible representation of both power and beauty in jewelry design.
The overall proportions of the piece are elegantly balanced, with the entire row of pearls connected by solid gold threads and encased in a rope-patterned frame along the border of the shield locket, showcasing meticulous and time-consuming craftsmanship.
The mini padlock at the bottom of the locket is another remarkable design feature of the piece. The intricately crafted lock continues the contour lines of the shield-shaped body and can actually be opened.
The piece is in good antique condition, with normal oxidation and signs of wear. Light scratches on the glass surface are to be expected. Since the evaluation of condition is highly subjective, please click and enlarge our photos to view more detailed information as a basis for your assessment.
