Antique micro mosaic dove of peace pendant c.1850
This micro mosaic pendant from France dates back to the middle of the 19th century. It is crafted in silver and features a micro mosaic dove made with Murano glass tiles. The mosaic itself was made in Italy and later fashioned into jewelry in France. It was once modified into a brooch and has been restored by us to its original pendant form.
This piece uses glass tiles made on the island of Murano, a small island near Venice, Italy, renowned for its glass-making expertise since the 13th century and celebrated in the 15th and 16th centuries for its exceptional craftsmanship.
The pendant boasts a bold and vibrant color scheme. A striking, vivid red serves as the background, contrasting beautifully with the central gold ring, creating an opulent and regal tone. The outer ring features a pattern of red and white triangles, adding to the dynamic outline, while the outermost layer of rich navy blue provides a striking contrast, making the overall color palette exceptionally eye-catching.
The details of the dove of peace, including its features and outline, are exquisitely rendered. The tiles are meticulously cut into the shapes of feathers to complete this dove in flight. The dove holds an olive branch in its beak, symbolizing peace. The piece is beautifully executed in terms of craftsmanship, composition, and symbolism.
The piece is in good antique condition, with normal signs of oxidation and wear. The pattern and glass tiles are mostly intact, with minimal damage, although there are some marks on the back from its previous conversion into a brooch.
