French Charles X turquoise tassel earrings c.1820
These French Charles X tassel earrings, circa 1820, are crafted in 18k solid gold and set with turquoise. The ear wires are later additions from the late 19th century and made in 9k gold.
The upper section of each earring features a knot motif encrusted with turquoise cabochons. Below, the design continues with a finely constructed woven gold rope, culminating in dimensional tassels. This intricate openwork adds texture, movement, and a sense of lightness to the earrings—an elegant demonstration of technical mastery in working with gold.
Knot motifs during this era were widely embraced as emblems of loyalty and emotional bonds, reflecting the Romantic period’s fascination with symbolism and sentimentality in personal adornment.
Originally designed to be worn in the “back-to-front” style typical of the time, the earrings were later converted with new ear wires in the late 19th century.
In antique condition consistent with age, the earrings show signs of oxidation and wear. One tassel shows a small dent, and signs of the later conversion are visible on the reverse.
