French Charles X agate bracelet in pomponne, c. 1820-1830
This poetic French bracelet from the Charles X period, circa 1820-1830, is composed of eleven hand-cut marquise-shaped agates — each one a miniature cabinet of curiosities for the wrist.
No two agates are alike. Each stone reveals a unique natural tableau: rust-stained cliffs, fog-draped fields, warm clay, lichen, and ash — Earth’s quiet poetry rendered in stone. The settings are crafted in pomponne, a golden alloy widely used in French jewelry during the 18th and early 19th centuries, prized for its rich color and malleability before solid gold became more common.
The design is ornate yet introspective. Delicate trefoil links, echoing the Romantic era’s fascination with Gothic revival and natural forms, join each agate in a flowing rhythm.
During the reign of Charles X, French jewelry turned toward sentiment and subtlety. The flamboyance of the Empire gave way to nature, nuance, and nostalgia — themes this bracelet captures with lyrical elegance.
The bracelet is in antique condition, showing normal signs of age and wear, including oxidation consistent with its age. Please note that one ornamental bead is missing. As condition assessment is subjective, we encourage you to click and enlarge our photos for a closer view of the details.
