French Perpignan garnet flower earrings c.1860

This pair of French earrings from the 1860s is crafted in 18k solid gold and set with vibrant garnets from the Perpignan region of southern France.

Designed as lively floral clusters, the earrings showcase garnets in a rich gradient of hues—ranging from rose red to soft pinks, purplish tones, and warm orange-reds. These distinctive colors are hallmarks of garnets sourced from the now-exhausted Perpignan mines. The stones are foil-backed and hand-cut in traditional rose cuts, then mounted in closed-back settings to heighten their fiery brilliance—techniques unique to Perpignan garnet jewelry of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Because these garnets are no longer mined, they remain exclusive to antique jewelry, making this pair a rare and charming example of regional French craftsmanship and historical gem use.

In antique condition appropriate to its age, the earrings show normal oxidation and signs of wear. Some garnet edges display minor chips under magnification, and while the posts bear hallmarks, they are worn and no longer fully legible.
