Early 19th Century French Figure-Eight Link Chain in Solid 18k Gold

Crafted in France during the early nineteenth century, this figure-eight link chain is made in solid 18k gold and measures 42 cm in length. It retains the French eagle's head hallmark.

The chain is composed of a continuous sequence of figure-eight links, each individually formed and assembled by hand. Their repeated arrangement creates a woven structure with exceptional flexibility, allowing the chain to drape naturally when worn.

Viewed up close, the surface reveals fine pleat-like undulations that catch and reflect light with movement. The closely interlocked links produce a woven appearance more commonly associated with braiding than conventional chain making.

Although the finished chain appears visually simple, its construction relies on the precise repetition of hundreds of individually made links. This type of structure is characteristic of the high level of technical skill achieved by nineteenth-century goldsmiths, where complexity is expressed through construction rather than ornament.
