English early Victorian hand sewn pearl Maltese cross pendant brooch
Hand sewn seed pearl jewelry first became popular in the late Georgian period and reached to its peak at early Victorian era (1837-1860) — during the time when rapid industrialization of Europe created the middle class, which could afford such jewelry. Jewelry decorated with seed pearls was associated with innocence and purity and considered a perfect birthday gift for young girls or for a bride on her wedding day.
These tiny seed pearls were commonly strung on white horse hair and have mother of pearl backs and metal pins (for brooch). This Maltese cross pendant is in excellent condition with all pearls intact and the bale of pendant is original- most of these hand sewn pearl jewelry are missing pearls or compartments due to its delicacy. Maltese cross is also a rare design in hand sewn jewelry because normally they are more of sweet and flowery design.
