Early 19th century Palais-Royal dance booklet in mother-of-pearl and gilt metal with original writing utensil
Fine French Palais-Royal gilt metal mounted mother of pearl dance card from Charles X era (c.1820-1830s).
The front cover is decorated with gilt bouquets to its four corners and the frame is finely chiseled with flowers and foliages. The mother-of-pearl cover is further engraved with lovely pomegranates which symbolize fertility in Ancient Greece and Rome. An enameled pansy is set to the center of cover with hand engraved letter “souvenir” atop. The name pansy comes from the French verb “penser”, meaning to “to think”. Give pansies as a gesture of friendship and love.
To the opening an interlocking snake-shape coiled metalwork holds the original gilt pencil. This dance card ( or little booklet) is typical of luxury objects sold in the Palais-Royal boutiques in Paris during the French Restoration. The dance booklet is empty at the moment and can be filled with your own papers.
