French Louis XVI emerald doublet gold diamond ring
During the reign of Louis XVI in France, circa the 1780s, this precious and rare ring emerges. Its design is distinctive, featuring intricate carvings resembling lace collar edges surrounding the central green gemstone. The adornment showcases a unique acanthus leaf motif, with old-cut diamonds set in the center of the plant's design. The main stone of the ring is a doublet emerald: the upper layer is glass, while the lower layer is an actual emerald. When viewed from the bottom of the gem, you can observe circular bubbles, a common characteristic of glass. The purpose of a doublet gem is to protect gemstones with lower hardness and durability, and in this ring, it serves to safeguard the emerald, which is over two centuries old.
The ring's shank is adorned with hand-chased patterns throughout, a distinctive decorative technique from the late 18th century to the early 19th century.
This ring is an original piece and not a modified item, remaining in a complete antique state.
It is in antique condition, showing oxidation and signs of wear from past wearers, and there are surface abrasions on the doublet gemstone. Since the condition assessment can be subjective, please kindly click to enlarge our photos to examine more details.
