French red foiled backed citrine dormeuse earrings c.1850
This pair of dormeuse earrings from France, dating to the 1850s, is crafted in solid 18k gold and set with red foiled-back citrines.
The citrines are in a closed-back setting, and their vibrant hues are achieved by the reflection from the red foil backing. This visual effect, often referred to as an “oil and vinegar color,” features two tones that blend yet remain distinct, much like oil and vinegar in the same bottle that layer together without fully mixing.
The earrings display a radiant warm orange tone, with patches of red, yellow, and orange that shift and layer with each viewing angle, creating a sunset-like display of color.
The earrings bear a French horse head mark, indicating they were crafted from 18k gold between 1838 and 1919. To preserve the foil’s vibrant color, avoid contact with water, as moisture can cause oxidation and discoloration.
The pair is in good antique condition, showing normal signs of oxidation and wear. As condition assessments are subjective, please click and enlarge our photos to examine more detailed condition aspects as part of your evaluation.
