Italian Art Nouveau lily of the valley & crescent “honeymoon” brooch pendant
This is a brooch from the Italian Art Nouveau period of the 1890s, crafted in 9k gold and adorned with rose-cut diamonds and garnets. It can be worn as both a brooch and a pendant.
The design of the brooch perfectly combines lilies of the valley with a crescent moon. Delicately crafted lily of the valley flowers, each adorned with a hand-cut rose-cut diamond, gracefully intertwine with the softly curved crescent moon. The buds of the lilies, leaning towards the crescent, add a sense of dimensionality to the composition, with multiple curved lines enhancing visual richness while maintaining the delicate beauty of the lilies. The leaves below exhibit fine vein-like patterns and are set with a vivid pink garnet, adding a lively touch to the piece.
The crescent moon itself features flowing, natural lines with a three-dimensional thickness. The use of openwork structure on one side maintains a sense of lightness, while the upper half is adorned with multilayered, voluminous curling decorations, echoing the lush, full shape of the lily of the valley leaves, showcasing a highly artistic design.
This brooch is a rebus, hiding meaning within its composition, waiting for the discerning viewer to unravel.
The language of the lily of the valley is 'happiness.' When combined with the moon and the term 'honeymoon,' it expresses the idea of a newlywed honeymoon, traditionally a gift from Victorian-era husbands to their wives, or a wedding gift from friends and family congratulating the newlyweds.
Different plants paired with the crescent moon convey different meanings: for example, violets signify "loyalty in love," forget-me-nots symbolize "true love," gardenias represent "enchanted love," and clover signifies "you belong to me."
