Austrian Romantic era hand-painted Eastern bluebird gold hook earrings c.1830
These Austrian earrings date back to the 1830s during the Romantic era. The base and outer frame are made of silver gilt, featuring hand-painted illustrations. We have replaced the original alloy hooks with 18k gold hooks for wearing comfort.
The Romantic era (1830-1850s), as a reaction to the First Industrial Revolution (1760-1840), valued nature and emphasized personal emotions and sensations. Unlike the Art Nouveau period, which was inspired by the flowing lines of nature, Romanticism's pursuit of nature was also evident in the materials used. Animal horn, shell, tortoiseshell, animal bone, coral, and ivory, as seen in this piece, were characteristic materials of this period's jewelry.
The illustrations depict a pair of Eastern bluebirds, native to North America, with bright blue feathers on their heads and backs, and contrasting orange-red chests. The delicate brushstrokes vividly bring these birds to life on a small canvas. Their varied poses and angles add dynamism to the piece, while the depiction of branches and leaves enhances the naturalistic composition. The richly emotional silver gilt frame encapsulates these lively bluebirds, fully reflecting the Romantic era's fascination with exotic creatures.
The piece is in good antique condition, with normal oxidation and signs of wear. The 18k solid gold ear hooks were replaced by us, not original.
