French Art Nouveau gemstone honeymoon brooch with detachable gemstone safety pin c.1890
This crescent bouquet gemstone brooch from the French Art Nouveau period (c. 1890) is crafted in 18k rose gold and sterling silver, set with diamonds, sapphires, and pearls. It comes with a matching gemstone-adorned safety pin.
The delicate, crescent-shaped branch with sapphire, diamond, and pearl accents reflects the flowing and elegant style of the Art Nouveau period. It also features a hidden rebus design, conveying a secret blessing.
"Rebus" comes from the Latin word for "things." A rebus is a puzzle that combines letters or images with similar sounds to form a word or phrase, concealing its true meaning within the design. This was a popular method for representing names in heraldry during the Middle Ages, and during the Renaissance, such intellectual designs were greatly appreciated.
The solution to this rebus is formed by combining a crescent moon ("moon") and a flower with nectar ("honey") to create the word "honeymoon." This expresses the idea of a newlywed couple’s honeymoon, making it a popular gift from Victorian husbands to their wives or from friends to a newly married couple.
Beyond its sentimental meaning, the brooch also features a detachable, smaller floral brooch designed as a decorative safety pin for added security. The floral safety pin continues the delicate and detailed design of the main brooch, allowing for versatile wear. It can be arranged in different positions with the main brooch, or worn separately as an independent brooch.
